Being an Innovative Entrepreneur

Of all the qualities that entrepreneurs possess one you will always seen in varying degrees is the ability to be innovative. You will see entrepreneurs:

o coming up against a problem and actively deciding to find a solution to solve it

Innovation

o subconsciously struggling with one of lives irritations only to have a 'eureka' moment when a better way suddenly strikes them

Being an Innovative Entrepreneur

o using a service or product everyday and starting a business by adding a slight twist to make it even better than before

You may look upon these innovators with a feeling of envy but don't despair, there is no reason why you cannot be an innovative entrepreneur! Not convinced? Here are some steps you can take to fuel your innovativeness.

Be Curious

You cannot be innovative unless you are curious about life, about what happens around you. Resolve to start looking at your experiences differently. Constantly questions things that happen to you. Why did it happen that like that? What would need to be done if I wanted a different outcome? What would that outcome be? How could that outcome be achieved?

Open up your eyes and your mind and start being curious.

Be Open to New Ideas

Being open to new ideas means putting yourself in situations where you can receive stimulation. You may not be seeking inspiration or a solution to problems but make sure you are regularly mixing with other business owners. Get into networking groups; seek out people who can give you fresh insights even if they are not within your sector or industry; read magazines and journals which are unrelated to your business.

Be Just Plain Weird!

Innovation rarely happens if you act within accepted norms. Deciding that something can't be done because it has never been done will not win you any prizes. Being innovative means being prepared to act against accepted or conventional wisdom; being prepared to challenge the unchallengeable is the way innovators succeed. In a nutshell ... go against the crowd and be weird

Be Ready

Innovative ideas can strike at any time of the day or night or in any place. Don't assume that ideas will pop up when you are sitting at your desk. As we saw in the previous point y their very nature innovative ideas are weird so expect them to surface in weird places! To capture them before they fall into the recesses of your mind always carry a notebook, Dictaphone, or PDA.

However outlandish the idea may seem write it down and resolve to look at it when you are in your most innovative frame of mind!

Be Persistent

Being innovative means being persistent. Whilst you may find a solution to your problem immediately but it very rarely happens that way. Solutions are out there, it just how long you are prepared to wait for them to appear.

Be Willing to Share

Whilst an innovative idea can strike and you can immediately take action invariably it takes someone else to fill in the missing pieces. Don't stumble around in the dark; find someone you can trust, someone who has the qualifications necessary to help move your idea forward.

Innovation in Action

One great example of innovation in action was the development of the Post-It Note - its evolution demonstrates the key principles of innovation. In 1968 Dr Spence Silver when working for 3M was researching new versions of adhesives. He came up with one was slightly sticky but not sufficient to bind itself to anything. He knew it was unusual but could not find an immediate use for it.

It wasn't until 1973 that having shared the concept with another person it went to the next level. His partner within the company, Geoff Nicholson championed it as a way of sticking items on notice boards but the idea still didn't capture anyone's imagination.

Finally another 3M employee, Art Fry, upon seeing one of the many presentations began to see the light. He also saw something in the product but like everyone else was struggling to make the final leap. His 'eureka' moment came when he became frustrated at how the bookmarks for his hymn book kept falling out - the unstickable adhesive had finally found its purpose!

See how the development of the Post-It Note fits in with the principles of innovation - curiosity; persistence; sharing the discovery; preparing to accept the plain weird (glue that doesn't stick??). It's all there in the development of this simple yet highly useful product.

Innovative ideas do not have to be the preserve of the lucky few. You too can come up with weird ideas if you let yourself!

Different Kinds of Skills

It's tempting to think of ourselves like characters in a video game, with a certain fixed pool of pre-programmed skills we can't ever deviate from. That's how I used to think of myself. As a kid, I was good at running, reading, and programming, but I couldn't do math, or sing, or-- this is a little embarrassing-- tie my shoes. But eventually, I discovered a powerful "meta-skill", the ability to pick up whatever new skills I wanted. I learned how to teach myself new abilities. I didn't even need a teacher-- just a book, or even just a website.

Let's take a look at some of the different types of skills in the world.

Innovation

INNATE SKILLS VS. LEARNED SKILLS

Different Kinds of Skills

An innate skill is one you have from birth. A learned skill is one you pick up at some point later in life, from a classroom or a book or a teacher or any other method. Certain abilities obviously fall in one category or the other. The ability to pilot a jet is obviously not something anyone had when they came out of the womb. On the other hand, the ability to see colors is something you're born with (provided you're not totally color blind).

That last example seems almost trivial; seeing colors is hardly really a "skill", so much as it's just something built into your body. As a matter of fact, the ONLY innate skills are trivial ones like this. This is a good thing, because it means you can acquire any other skill you like-- including ones which some people mistakenly think are innate.

The best example is math. A common complaint is: "I'm just not any good at math." This sentiment reflects a belief that people are simply born being good at math, or not. This is an unempowering belief system, leaving us at the whims of fate. I was terrible at math until the seventh grade. I thought I was just born that way. Then one day I was seduced by the beautiful illustrations in Euclid's "Elements", and as I read through the ancient propositions in that book, I realized math was learnable. Now I'm a third year math PhD student!

HOBBIES AND CHORES

Another way to divide skills up is to distinguish hobbies from chores. A hobby ability is something you do for fun, something that makes you feel like a child again, something you'd do even if you weren't being paid. Chores are things we do to put food on the table. For most people, playing cards is a hobby, while washing the dishes is a chore.

What determines whether an ability is a hobby or a chore, is whether we do it because we choose to or because we're forced to. But here, again, the dichotomy isn't quite what it seems. The truth is, we're hardly forced to do anything. An accountant is not forced to do accounting: he always has the choice of quitting his job. Even a soldier doesn't have to fight, having the choice to opt for court martial and jail instead.

So with the exception of the basics like breathing and eating, every chore is something which we chose to do. No matter how lousy someone's job is, they're there because they chose to be there, and they can leave at any time. Yes, I am saying what you think I'm saying: every chore is a hobby. This counterintuitive claim reflects a deeper metaphysical property of the universe: we all get exactly what we want-- just sometimes we don't really know or direct our deepest inner desire.

SKILLS AND METASKILLS

This division isn't really a division, but a hierarchy: every meta-ability is an ability, but not vice versa. The "meta" prefix indicates that the ability acts upon other abilities. For example, when I learned that it was possible to teach myself whatever skill I desire, that's an example of a metaskill: the ability to learn any skill. Other examples include the ability to teach any skill, the ability to analyze any skill, the ability to write about any skill, and so on.

The coolest thing about these "meta" abilities is that they can act on themselves recursively. For example, as someone with the meta-ability to teach myself any skill, in particular I can teach myself more about self-teaching. Someone who can teach any skill, can, in particular, also teach that teaching ability.

Conclusion

Be wary of buying into arbitrary divisions among talents-- there's usually more to these divisions than meets the eye. When in doubt, always go with whichever belief is more empowering. Whether you're right or wrong, you're more empowered either way. Even if a limiting belief were true, it would still be limiting.

Different Kinds of Skills

I wrote a whole article about Metaskills at my blog, Glowing Face Man.

What is Organizational Innovation?

Defining Innovation

Organizational innovation refers to new ways work can be organized, and accomplished within an organization to encourage and promote competitive advantage. It encompasses how organizations, and individuals specifically, manage work processes in such areas as customer relationships, employee performance and retention, and knowledge management.

Innovation

At the core of organizational innovation is the need to improve or change a product, process or service. All innovation revolves around change - but not all change is innovative. Organizational innovation encourages individuals to think independently and creatively in applying personal knowledge to organizational challenges. Therefore, organizational innovation requires a culture of innovation that supports new ideas, processes and generally new ways of "doing business".

What is Organizational Innovation?

The Benefit of an Innovative Organization

In promoting a culture of innovation organizations should foster:

- Cross functional team building while discouraging silo building

- Independent, creative thinking to see things from a new perspective and putting oneself outside of the parameters of a job function

- Risk taking by employees while lessening the status quo

The value and importance of knowledge and learning within organizational innovation is crucial. If innovation is about change, new ideas, and looking outside of oneself to understand ones environment, then continuous learning is a requirement of organizational innovation success.

The value of learning and knowledge can only be realized once put into practice. If new organizational knowledge doesn't result in change, either in processes, business outcomes, or increased customers or revenues, then its value hasn't been translated into success.

The road to organizational innovation lies in the ability to impart new knowledge to company employees and in the application of that knowledge. Knowledge should be used for new ways of thinking, and as a stepping stone to creativity and toward change and innovation.

Steps to Innovation

To determine how supportive your current environment is in fostering innovation read the frequently asked questions and answers below, about how to build an organizational culture that encourages innovation.

1) Is a climate of innovation supported by senior management?

a. That means, that such activities as risk taking and small ad hoc work groups that brainstorm and talk through ideas need to be promoted, supported and encouraged in the organization.

2) Do managers routinely identify and bring together those individuals more oriented toward innovation those willing to think new ideas and act on them?

a. Identifying new thinkers and individuals oriented toward change helps to ensure an outlet for innovation by supporting these individuals and giving them and like-minded colleagues the time and opportunity to think creatively. This is tantamount to becoming an innovative organization.

3) Is there a process in place monitoring innovation teams and identifying what has and hasn't worked as a result of them?

a. Maintaining and monitoring innovation is important. This requires checks and balances that identifies how innovation is developed and managed and processes that capture what did or didn't work. In order to be able to continue to innovate in a changing environment, continually monitoring the internal and external environment to determine what supports or hinders innovation is key.

4) How can an organization be strategic and focused on it goals yet build and develop an innovative culture?

a. The value of a strategic focus remains important to a company's success. In fact, clear direction and understanding of a company's mission can help fuel innovation - by knowing where in the organization innovation and creativity would provide the most value. An innovative organizational culture creates a balance between strategic focus, and the value of new ideas and processes in reaching them.

5) Is there a single most important variable or ingredient that fuels an organization toward an innovative culture?

a. Similar to other successes of an organization, what drives innovation are the people of the organization. First, management must set the expectation of innovation and creativity and then "doing business" is about how to improve processes, products and customer relationships on a day-to-day basis. This mindset itself will create an ongoing culture of innovation.

Advantages to Enjoy When Using a Divorce Website to Obtain Your Uncontested Divorce

From trading stocks on Wall Street to ordering pizza online at one's favorite restaurant, the internet presents new and innovative ways for humans to get through the normal chaos called "life."

One of the newest trends offered through the web community is the ability for two divorcing spouses to get their divorce on the internet.

Innovation

Yet, how is it possible to get an online divorce if a majority of couples seemingly wind up in family court to arrive at a fair and equitable agreement?

Advantages to Enjoy When Using a Divorce Website to Obtain Your Uncontested Divorce

The answer is a simple one that will lead the parties in the direction of a quick easy divorce.

As long as both parties can see eye to eye on all aspects of their breakup and agree to sign their documents, the most important of the uncontested divorce requirements are met; and the couple is then rewarded with the ability to complete a divorce online using website designated for such services.

Although easily agreeing during a divorce is its own advantage, there are still many more benefits to using an online website to obtain an uncontested divorce.

The first advantage for the two parties is their ability to save thousands of dollars.

How is this possible?

An online uncontested divorce website is meant for two spouses who have agreed on all aspects of their divorce and can therefore divorce without an attorney because they do not need help in coming to a fair settlement. Though the parties will still be responsible for the fees to file their case with the court, the overall cost for the entire procedure greatly lessens when attorney's fees are taken out of the equation.

A second advantage of doing an uncontested divorce online comes in the form of document revisions.

A majority of divorce websites offer a customer the ability to alter their court forms (i.e adding or subtracting items of marital property or changing child support and/or custody agreements) at little or not cost to the customer.

This benefit is not available to those using an attorney for their divorce.

Family law firms generally operate in such a way that the client is charged for everything possible. From the time it takes to change the divorce documents themselves according to a client's wishes, to the cost of the printer toner used to print the documents, one can expect that absolutely nothing will be left out of their final divorce cost if choosing not use an online divorce service.

And there are even more advantages to internet and divorce:

omost of the divorce process can be carried out through the mail (including filing one's documents with the local courthouse and then serving the other party with their half of the paperwork);

oin most cases neither spouse will ever have to appear in front of the judge for a divorce hearing;

ofinally, both spouses will be in total control of their divorce and its outcome because they are not at the mercy of an attorney to get them successfully through the process.

Who wouldn't want to use a online website to receive all of these great benefits while getting an amicable divorce at the same time?

Japanese Developing Sex Robots

What propels human innovation? Well, we know where the funding comes from. We know that funding comes when a Return on Investment is available. What do people spend money on? Well, think of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. People want to maintain self preservation, so you will find the greatest technological money flows in those things, which protect the sanctity of life; things such as Health Care and Medical advances, security and military. People also wish respect from their fellow man. They want to look good; thus you will find consumer items such as make-up, clothing, sports cars, etc. Humans also want companionship and entertainment and so we see advances in movie special effects, computer games and now the Japanese are developing human female robots. Today they advertise them as maids, receptionists and servers. But in the true spirit of Kama Sutra, you can bet that those Japanese robotic engineers will soon be designing Blonde Hair Blue Eyed sex robots to serve their will.

These Japanese scientists have unveiled the most human-looking robot to date, well at least in the public domain. Secret research is being done now which looks towards the future to build robots so real they will fool humans, in other words they maybe sitting next to you and you would never even know it. The Japanese scientists call their new robot android Repliee Q1 Expo. She flutters her eyelids in normal human increments, looks like she is breathing and moves her hands just like a human would. This robot has over 42 actuators. But indeed, this is merely the first step in human type robotics.

Innovation

We all know that the Internet is used most in recreational use for surfing websites, such as pornography, chat, online dating and personal communications of the sort. It should be obvious that the near future of robotic androids will be used for sexual pleasure. Isaac Asimov and others have cited this as the most probable use. Not only have science fiction authors put these futuristic predicts forth but Hollywood has as well in several movies such as "A.I. Artificial Intelligence."

Japanese Developing Sex Robots

Using tactile sensors and the latest Haptics research the Japanese scientists are well on their way to the development of their next marketable technology. The Repliee Q1 Expo has 42 actuators, but some of the MIT robots, will mimic the human nerves in the hand already have 250 sensors. New skin technologies will allow the robots to have real human skin grown in petri dishes and these might also be incorporated in the sexual revolution of robots. Change and Pressures to Innovate - The Coca Cola Case

Think about "Coca Cola," and tell me what you come up with. (I'll just wait a moment ...)
... Possible associations are with: a giant company, a great drink, sugar.

But not with health.

Innovation

Companies like Coca Cola and McDonald's are forced to change because of trends that affect their business in a negative way. Coca Cola is traded on the New York Stock exchange and its stock price has declined about fifty percent over the last eight years -- from 90$ in 1998 to 45$ currently (www.nasdaq.com / stock: KO).

Change and Pressures to Innovate - The Coca Cola Case

One such a trend is health and fitness. People invest more and more in health and fitness. McDonald's, for example has introduced salads in a response to this trend, Coca Cola recently announced the introduction of a calorie burning soft drink: Enviga - Coke's Enviga: It May Burn Calories, but It Isn't a Cure for a Bulging Belly," mentions the Wall Street Journal (http://articles.news.aol.com/business/_a/cokes-enviga-it-may-burn-calories-but-it/20061013075409990001)

Interesting is also the fact that Coca Cola is cooperating with the Swiss company Nestle, that is no coincidence because the soft drink is "tea based." Developing new business like this is also another trend we have seen done by other companies in fact by one of the competitors of Nestle -- Sara Lee / DE (Douwe Egberts). They have collaborated with Philips in the design and roll-out of the "Senseo" a single serve coffee machine."

In both cases the companies are dealing with innovation and change. The innovation is done by a new product development. The change is initiated by a trigger from a new trend that affected the business of both companies. For Coca Cola the change is due to a health trend that affects their market and that also provides a new train to jump on.

The question is whether the market will recognize Coca Cola as a business dedicated to health. (Product) innovation is one thing, changing the image of a company another.
The current image of Coca Cola is still associated with action, youth and passion, but not (yet) with health. And that is probably why the new product development is done cooperating with another company. A sort of island solution -- once it has become a success the next step in the change will be examined and prepared. Let's just follow this stock for a while...

The Better Days of Dell Inspiron 1501

Released in late 2006, the Dell Inspiron 1501 is among Dell's mainstream models. It belongs to such category mainly because of its consumer friendly price. Although it has been roughly four years, this model is still popular since the computer parts and specifications are on the higher end.

The Processor Breakthrough

Innovation

The Dell Inspiron 1501 is Dell's very first model to use only AMD as its processor. All its predecessors used Intel, therefore putting the 1501 on breakthrough. This model can run using AMD Turion, AMD Athlon 64 X2, or AMD Sempron processor. These processor options have shifted people's attention from solely Intel computers to AMD.

The Better Days of Dell Inspiron 1501

Parts and Features

Dell Inspiron 1501 has 15.4 inches widescreen size, which belongs to the mid-size category. Its widescreen feature enables users to set the screen resolution up to 1280 × 800. Its memory starts from 512 megabytes and can be expanded up to 2 gigabytes DDR2. The hard disk space is 60 gigabytes and can also be expanded to 320 gigabytes. The graphics processor and chipset is an Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 1150. With these computer parts and specifications, the 1501 can be used for gaming, but only limited to games in 2006 which require fewer specifications. Nonetheless, with a graphics processor such as the Radeon Xpress, and the widescreen feature, the 1501 is suitable to run heavy and demanding graphics.

Other features include DVD-reader and CD writer, 802.11 mini card for Wi-Fi, 6 cell battery (can be expanded up to 12 cell), and input/output devices such as 4 USB ports, 1 56k modem, 1 fast Ethernet port, 3 in 1 memory card reader, express card slot, and the usual VGA output, headphone jack, microphone jack and power adapter port.

The Appearance

The Dell Inspiron 1501 looks sleek in silver, white and black color, enabling it to veer away from the plain looking laptops. The corners are curved which adds to its study appearance. The screen latch and the back of the screen are plastic but are still sturdy and light. Plus, plastic does not conduct heat brought by the power.

The Price

The starting price of the 1501 is 9, which is pretty low for its features. This affordable model enabled many users to purchase it. It is among Dell's low priced units which opened doors to the more consumer friendly market.

Overall, since innovation in laptop models are rapid, and the Dell Inspiron 1501 may sound obsolete, its computer parts, features and specifications say the otherwise. With its low price and good specifications it was among the most popular models of its time. Its ability for hardware expansion implies its versatility to every user's demands.

The Better Days of Dell Inspiron 1501

Will Jackson is one of the customers who is satisfied for the product, Dell Inspiron 1501. Buy computers now to get the benefits and satisfaction you want for a dell laptop.

Effect of Technology on Our Lives

Technology is an improved route to an unimproved target. Technology is associated with innovation. It involves the transformation of ideas into something useful. Innovation is just not limited to creative people and organizations, but also involves the availability of technological and scientific talent. Technology and innovation are synergistic. Technology has definitely changed our lives and for the better.

Looking back in time, we realize how much our lives have changed due to the fruits of technology. It has provided us with freedom and less consumption of time and resources. Pointing out a particular technology for the drastic changes in one's life is simply not possible. A nation's economic growth can be measured according to the level of technology. This is because a number of factors are responsible for affecting an individual's life style. The most important factor for deciding the working of a particular technology is the presence of competition. One kind of technology seems beneficial only until a technological advancement does not occur.

Innovation

The most effective piece of technology is the mobile phone, and now a days being equivalent to a civilization. Due to technological changes, the dependency upon technology has increased many folds. Some advancement occurs at such a pace that they become self-defeating. The ability to convert carbon dioxide into fuel energy is a breakthrough process and once well established in would change our dependency on nonrenewable and limited sources.

Effect of Technology on Our Lives

With time, the use of internet is rising rapidly. The World Wide Web literally connects over 700 million people round the globe. The state-of-the-art technology has improved our means of communication as well as our educational standards. Due to the innovations in technology, an individual can gain knowledge about any topic at any place and at any point of time in his/her life. It has allowed the ease of availability of education. It has also improvised upon ways to fulfill our needs and to meet our expectations. Innovations in today's tech-world can help us to solve urgent problems.

The revolution in technology has given rise to chat rooms, discussion rooms, personalized web pages and online databases. The IT sector has completely changed the outlook of human communication with e-mails, video conferencing and instant messaging. With the advent of technology, people are building bridges to decrease the distances in their mind. One basic drawback that has taken place is that people are becoming lethargic due to high trends in technology. It is shortening our ability to pay attention. Robotics, automation and computerization are on the go for changing our lives. Implementation of robotics will give higher efficiency and cheaper labor, thereby increasing unemployment rate.

Now the other side of technology is not so green. It is because of improvised technology only that we have seen nuclear and atomic wars. This has also leaded to increase in pollution as well as corruption. Hence, one must know how to balance between manpower and automation. In the world of automation, cars have created freedom as well as concrete jungle. Technology is affecting our near future so it becomes our responsibility to streamline it in the right direction.

Types of Innovation

Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation.

There are other useful definitions in this field, for example, creativity can be defined as consisting of a number of ideas, a number of diverse ideas and a number of novel ideas.

Innovation

There are distinct processes that enhance problem identification and idea generation and, similarly, distinct processes that enhance idea selection, development and commercialisation. Whilst there is no sure fire route to commercial success, these processes improve the probability that good ideas will be generated and selected and that investment in developing and commercialising those ideas will not be wasted.

Types of Innovation

Types of Innovation

Tidd et al (2005) argue that there are four types of innovation; consequently the innovator has four pathways to investigate when searching for good ideas:

a) Product Innovation - new products or improvements on products. The new Mini or the updated VX Beetle, new models of mobile phones and so on.

b) Process Innovation - where some part of the process is improved to bring benefit. Just in Time is a good example.

c) Positioning Innovation - Lucozade used to be a medicinal drink but the was repositioned as a sports drink.

d) Paradigm Innovation - where major shifts in thinking cause change. During the time of the expensive mainframe, Bill Gates and others aimed to provide a home computer for everyone.
